After screenwriting Fox’s first take on the Dark Phoenix story, Simon Kinberg is set to direct the studio’s second attempt, X-Men: Dark Phoenix.
Deadline broke the news earlier today, also announcing Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Nicholas Hoult, Alexandra Shipp, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, and Kodi Smit-McPhee are all set to reprise their roles.
The report also stated that Jessica Chastain is in talks to join the cast as its main villain, Shi’ar Empress Lilandra.
Kinberg not only co-wrote X-Men: The Last Stand, but he has also written and produced X-Men: Apocalypse and X-Men: Days of Future Past, produced X-Men: First Class and Logan, and is credited as the executive producer for FX’s Legion and The Gifted. Therefore, he has had a large part in building the X-Men franchise, however, it should be noted that this will be his first role as a director.
Regardless, having the cast reprise their current roles will attract fans to theaters, as many have grown fond of Fassbender’s Magneto, McAvoy’s Xavier, and Lawrence’s Mystique. At the same time, the cast of the younger X-Men have also been received well by audiences. Lastly, adding Jessica Chastain to an already favorable cast would only bring more excitement to the film, as she has proven that she has the acting ability to play a variety of roles.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix is set to release November 2, 2018.
